As the inherent risks of factory-farm produced food come to light, there’s a growing interest in getting to know your local farmer. With this in mind, we wanted to share our philosophy and why we do what we do here at Boondocks Farm.

In 2008, we began to feel the call to “find some land” and around the same time, we watched the documentary Food Inc. and learned about Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms and his book You Can Farm. Through this series of events, we had a fire lit within us that only a true passion can ignite.

 At Boondocks Farm, our livestock is pasture-raised on the rolling acreage of our farm, located just off of I-70 in rural Knightstown. “Pasture-raised” has a nice ring to it, but the way we raise our animals is more than just a nice-sounding phrase.

What does it mean when we say “pasture-raised”? The key to healthy animals and healthy food is healthy soil. When raising anything on pasture, be it cattle, chickens, lamb and even pigs, they must be given fresh pasture on a regular basis. For instance, the chickens we raise for meat are moved every single morning to fresh grass. This movement is paramount to producing healthy pastures and healthy food.

1. Select an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable. Look for a location that offers a wholesome environment, and consider including families in your events. Your employees want to spend their free time with their families, so making families a part of your event will give you hero status with both your employees and their families.
